Dana has been a Critical Care Nurse, specializing in Neuroscience for the past 7 years. Dana is a member of AANN and is currently the Stroke Program Coordinator for UCI Medical Center, the only academic hospital in the nation to be a JCAHO certified stroke center. Dana was responsible for developing several stroke protocols, including the pre and post t-PA orders that are currently utilized at UCI. Dana finds the care and management of the Acute Stroke Patient to be a very challenging and rewarding experience.
Course Description
This course is designed to improve the assessment, care and management skills of the nurse who cares for the Acute Stroke Patient. The importance and urgency of early diagnosis of Ischemic Stroke as well as appropriate treatment options will be discussed. Criteria for Thrombolytic’s (t-PA), including the inclusion/exclusion of patient’s as well as the critical considerations post t-PA will be discussed. Characteristics and criteria of specific stroke assessment scales including the National Institute of Stroke Scales will be presented. Emphasis on the strong nursing assessment skills required when caring for the Acute Stroke Patient as well as the importance of early patient/family education will be presented.

and neuro-vasculature of the brain.
9:15am – 10:15am
“The Nurse’s Role as a member of the Stroke Team”. Clinical
presentation etiology (Ischemic vs. Hemorrhagic), and
the importance of early diagnosis.
10:15am – 10:30am Break
10:30am – 11:30am
“Everything you wanted to know about t-PA”. Thrombolytic
Therapy as a treatment option for the Acute
Ischemic Stroke Patient.
11:30am – 12:30am
Lunch (Provided by DNE)
12:30pm – 1:30pm
“Nursing Assessment of the Acute Stroke Patient”. Multi-system
assessment to include Cardiac, Arrhythmias/ECG Changes
Respiratory, Venous Thrombosis, Pulmonary Emboli,
Hyperthermia and Hyperglycemia.
1:30pm – 2:30pm
“Common Stroke Scales”. Categories & Characteristics as well as
guidelines for the use of the National Institute of Health Stroke
Scale (NIHSS). Information on how to go online and get
NIHSS certified will be provided.
2:30pm – 3:00pm Break
3:00pm – 4:00pm
“Post Stroke Issues”. Worsening condition, causes of death,
psychological issues and focused patient/family education.
