Kristi Hudson has been a Critical Care Nurse since 1990. Kristi has worked at UCI Medical Center since 1993 which is a Level 1 Trauma Center. Kristi has extensive experience in caring for the Critically Ill Patient and has held both Clinical and Supervisory positions in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. She is currently the Nurse Manager of the Neuroscience Department which is comprised of a 7 bed Neuro ICU and a 16 bed Neuro Medical Surgical floor. Kristi has her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing and has her Certification in Critical Care (CCRN). Kristi finds the high acuity medical surgical patient very challenging and is excited to be presenting information to assist in the care and management of this complex patient population.
Course Description
This course is designed to focus on current therapies that are required to care for the complex Medical/Surgical patient. Discussion will include the importance of Legal Documentation (the do’s and don’ts) as well as insertion, care and management of the patient who requires a Chest Tube. Other important care modalities such as IV therapy (Fluids and Types of Access) and Safe Medication Administration will also be presented. In addition, Pain Management (Assessment, Narcotic Choices and Delivery Systems) as well as Skin/Wound care will also be presented. Being able to show Cultural Competence in caring for patients of different ethnicity will be the final focus of this seminar.

8:00 – 9:00 Legal Documentation
This segment focuses on the Do’s and Don’ts of Nursing Documentation including the use of approved abbreviations.
9:00- 10:00 Chest Tubes
Pathophysiology/Care and Management of the patient who requires chest tube placement. Assisting with Insertion and Discontinuing a chest tube will also be discussed.
10:00-10:15 Break
10:15-11:15 IV Therapy
IV Solutions; which solution is appropriate for which patient? Assessment and treatment for fluid volume overload/deficit and care and management of the patient who has a Triple Lumen, Cordis, PICC Line and Porta Cath.
11:15-11:45 Safe Medication Administration
This segment includes common medication administration errors and how to avoid them. Also included are the new “seven rights” of medication dispensing and the 2005 JCAHO standards of safe medication administration.
11:45-12:45 Lunch Provided By DNE
12:45-2:00 Pain Management
Pain assessment/management, types of medications and delivering devices (PCA, Epidural Catheter) will be the focus of this segment.
2:00-3:00 Skin/Wound Care
How to assess and prevent initial skin breakdown, staging actual breakdown and planning care for treatment. Wound care and use of a “Wound Vac” as a treatment option will also be presented.
3:00-3:15 Break
3:15-4:00 Cultural Diversity
Nursing assessment that demonstrates cultural care and competence. Gain a better understanding of what your patient is or isn’t saying.

Cancellations/Refunds
Cancellations made less then 14 days prior to class will require a $25.00 processing fee. After class start date, no refunds or credits will be given. No refunds will be given for "No Shows". In the unlikely event that course cancellation is required by this company, only tuition fees will be reimbursed.
